Biomedical Calculations: Principles and Practice

Biomedical Calculations: Principles and Practice
Publisher:Wiley Pages:310 2008-10-20 ISBN:0470519118 PDF 1.5 MB

Biomedical Calculations: Principles and Practice is an accessible, student-friendly introduction to calculating, applying formulae and solving quantitative problems within these subjects. This book targets a problem area for many students and aims to give them the confidence which they are so often lacking when undertaking scientific calculations. It takes a unique approach to the subject and uses unit analysis as a central theme throughout the book to enhance student understanding.

Clearly structured throughout, little basic knowledge of mathematics is assumed, but even the most numerate readers will be interested in the sometimes-novel biological detail. Numerous worked examples, supplementary questions and practice problems are provided and although the book is written to be read in sequence, it will also be a useful reference.

The central theme of the book focuses on the value of unit analysis in solving quantitative problems, with explanations on how to avoid errors in calculations and in checking, understanding and deriving formulae and equations. As a background to this, there is extensive treatment of physical units, both individually (e.g. kg, m, mmol) and in combination (e.g. m s¯², mmol L¯¹), and also of other aspects of quantitative thinking. A variety of topics (mostly from physiology, pharmacology and biochemistry) are used to demonstrate these calculations in practice.

Key features:

* An accessible, student-friendly introduction for all those hesitant in calculating, applying formulae and solving quantitative problems
* An innovative approach to scientific calculations and how to work with unfamiliar formulae for the biomedical and life sciences
* Includes modern, up to date definition of pH eliminating the need for logarithms and a discussion of the importance of pH
* Clear introduction on how to use the book, guidance on units and unit conversion, and an appendix on basic mathematics and notation
* Use of unit analysis as a central theme
* Includes numerous worked examples and supplementary questions throughout the text to enhance student understanding

9. Six Sigma for Marketing Processes: An Overview for Marketing Executives, Leaders, and Managers.

Nearly half of the top one hundred Fortune 500 companies use Six Sigma methodology in some part of their business. These companies have been among the top one hundred for five or more years and consistently report higher revenue and significantly higher profits than competitors. This underscores the impact on the cost side. Now the focus moves to revenue growth. Six Sigma consultant Clyde M. Creveling’s Design for Six Sigma in Technology and Product Development is the standard guide for product commercialization and manufacturing support engineers who want to apply Six Sigma methodology to technology development and product commercialization. Now, in Six Sigma for Marketing Processes, Creveling joins with Lynne Hambleton and Burke McCarthy to show the ways marketing professionals can adapt and apply those same Six Sigma concepts to create a lean marketing workflow built for growth.

This book provides an overview of the way marketing professionals can utilize the value offered by Six Sigma tools, methods, and best practices, within their existing phase-gate processes, as well as the traditional Six Sigma problem-solving approach: define, measure, analyze, improve, control (DMAIC). It provides unique methods for employing Six Sigma to enhance the three marketing processes for enabling a business to attain growth: strategic, tactical, and operational. It goes further to demonstrate the way Six Sigma for marketing and Six Sigma for design can be combined into a unified Six Sigma for growth. In this book, you’ll learn how to apply Six Sigma methodology to

Develop a lean, efficient marketing workflow designed for growth
Enhance the three marketing arenas for growth: strategic, tactical, and operational
Identify leading indicators of growth and become proactive about performance improvement

Leaders Inside You

1. Gurus on Leadership

In a world where every business and organization is in a permanent state of change, these questions are asked constantly. Yet ‘leadership’ as a word did not really appear in a dictionary until the late 1800s. Prior to that period of time leaders enjoyed largely inherited power and authority. It was the time of Kings and Tyrants. ‘Leadership’ as a topic for development and study in the business world only came into real focus with the onset of the industrial era of the early 20th century.

http://rapidshare.com/files/36619824/1854183516.rar

2. Creating Leaderful Organizations: How to Bring Out Leadership in Everyone

Leadership has traditionally resided in one person with many followers. This book presents a new model of mutual leadership, which transforms leadership from one individual's responsibility into a new way of working for everyone.

Creating Leaderful Organizations demonstrates the bottom-line benefits of this model, shows how it is already working in numerous companies, and offers guidance in implementation. Author Joseph Raelin explains how to distribute leadership roles; develop individuals to be leaders; deal with resistance; and achieve the "4 c's of leaderful practice" -- concurrent leadership, collective leadership, collaborative leaders, and compassionate leaders.

http://rapidshare.com/files/36457648/packp.rar

3. Maintaining Team Performance

Between the time a team is launched and the time it delivers results, managers need to know that the team is on course. Whether they have launched a team to achieve a business objective or have inherited a team, they need to monitor effectiveness on an ongoing basis and make course corrections that keep small problems from becoming major disasters.

Monitoring and maintaining team performance is a key element of leading a team. You can provide that leadership by paying attention to four important dimensions: team member effort, team member knowledge and skills, team tactics, and group dynamics. By focusing on those four areas, you can assess your team’s performance, zero in on areas of weakness, and take the corrective measures necessary to ensure peak performance and to deliver expected results.
